England is an ongoing, open-ended portrait of my home country, built from photographs I find rather than set out to make. As I walk and shoot, certain images reveal themselves as distinctly, indefinably English and those become part of this work. I release new pictures twice a year, but the project itself has no end. What defines "England”? I don't entirely know, but I'm looking for it in subtle ways - in the comical sense of failure that runs through our national character, the cake fallen at the garden party, and in the rugged beauty and deep history of a country that changed the world for better and worse. The work captures both sides - our glorious landscapes and our grim housing estates, our decaying seaside towns and moments of everyday absurdity. There is something about this country that's almost impossible to describe, but it's there - in the light, the weather, the worn edges of things. This is my attempt to find it.
More pictures soon.
